Are graduated compression stockings still essential for VTE prophylaxis in general surgical patients?*

Background: Current guidelines for the prevention of venous thromboembolism in surgical patients continue to recommend the use of graduated compression stockings in addition to low molecular weight heparins (LMWH). Nearly all the studies documenting a prophylactic benefit from these stockings were carried out before the introduction of LMWH. Patients, methods: We studied the rate of symptomatic...

Graduated compression stockings in the prevention of postoperative venous thromboembolism. A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND The effectiveness of graduated compression stockings in prophylaxis of postoperative venous thromboembolism is unclear to many physicians. Surveys show there is considerable variability in their use and their perceived effectiveness. We undertook to establish, by a systematic overview of the literature, the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings in the prophylactic setting ...

This article reviews the mechanism of action, efficacy and complications of stockings in preventing DVT. METHODS Relevant publications indexed in Medline (1966-1998) and the Cochrane database were identified. Appropriate articles ...

Various guidelines and recommendations are available in clinical practice but the search continues for an ideal agent or combination of agents for VTE prophylaxis. Rudolf Virchow first described Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and the su...

The use of graduated compression stockings in association with fondaparinux in surgery of the hip: a multicentre, multinational, randomised, open-label, parallel-group comparative study.

Little is known about the efficacy of graduated compression stockings in preventing venous thromboembolism after hip surgery. We conducted a prospective, randomised single-blind study to determine whether the addition of compression stockings to fondaparinux conferred any additional benefit. The study included 874 patients, of whom 795 could be evaluated (400 in the fondaparinux group and 395 i...
